IQOS is not an "e-cigarette." Start by naming things correctly.

In Japan, plenty of people call IQOS an "e-cigarette." It works in conversation. But if you're thinking about quitting or health risk, this label is a little risky.

IQOS is heated tobacco

In classifications abroad, IQOS is generally a **heated tobacco product.** Meanwhile, products widely used in the West like VAPE, JUUL, Elf Bar, and Lost Mary are **e-cigarettes / ENDS** that heat a liquid to inhale an aerosol. IQOS heats "tobacco leaf." A vape heats "liquid." Blur this difference and you'll misjudge both the risk and the countermeasures.

The CDC explains heated tobacco as a product that heats tobacco sticks in a dedicated device and inhales a nicotine-containing aerosol. In other words, even if it doesn't combust as much as a cigarette, it's a tobacco product in that you're inhaling tobacco-leaf-derived nicotine. The CDC says all tobacco products, including heated tobacco, are harmful, and clinicians should check use of not just cigarettes but heated products as well.

How it differs from e-cigarettes and vapes

E-cigarettes and vapes, on the other hand, heat and inhale nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, flavorings, and more contained in a liquid. A National Academies report frames it: while e-cigarette aerosol tends to contain fewer types and amounts of harmful substances than cigarette smoke, exposure to nicotine and heat-generated toxicants varies greatly by product design and use.

What's important here is that "not a cigarette" does not equal "quit."

Someone who switched to IQOS may feel they cut down on cigarettes, or reduced smoke and smell. Someone who moved to a nicotine vape abroad may feel "it's better because it doesn't burn." There's no need to reject those feelings outright. It's a fact that the harm from combusting cigarettes is extremely large, and exposure amounts may differ between products.

Switching products isn't breaking free

Still, what a quit-smoking column should say is clear:

**Switching products and breaking free from nicotine addiction are two different things.**

Even if you switch to IQOS, if you smoke it right after waking, the addiction circuit remains. Even if you switch to a vape, if you use it between tasks, after meals, and while drinking, maybe only the location of the smoking behavior changed. Even if the cigarette's fire goes out, if a life of "I can't settle down without it" continues, quitting is still in progress.

Start by naming things correctly

So in a first article, I'd want to convey this:

IQOS is not an e-cigarette.

A vape is not heated tobacco.

But both are products that can leave nicotine addiction in place.

Accurate classification isn't fussy wordplay. It's the first step to a reader understanding "what am I actually inhaling?"

The start of quitting begins — before deciding "let's quit smoking" — with correctly naming the product you use.
