What EVALI taught us. The danger of vaping isn't only the "product itself."
In 2019, a serious lung injury called EVALI became a major problem in the US. EVALI stands for e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury.
This event is important for thinking about the risks of vaping. But don't misread it. EVALI isn't a simple case explainable by ordinary nicotine vapes alone. In many cases, THC-containing products — especially those from informal channels — were involved.
What caused EVALI
A study published in NEJM found vitamin E acetate in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of EVALI patients, indicating an association with EVALI. The study reported that vitamin E acetate was detected in nearly all of 51 patients, and not detected in a healthy comparison group.
