Mr. N had no intention of quitting cigarettes.
He knew he ought to. It said so on the pack, his doctor had told him, his wife had told him, and the young employees at the office told him too — not in words, but with their eyes.
But knowing and quitting were two different things.
One day, a strange shop appeared by the station.
The sign read:
"Future Cigarettes. No smoke, no smell, no harm."
Mr. N laughed. There was no such thing. But a person who smokes is skeptical of the words for quitting, and surprisingly obedient to the words for continuing.
