⏸️ It wasn't cigarettes you missed — it was the pause
People who've been quit for a while sometimes catch themselves saying, "I miss smoking."
Take that at face value and you land on: see, nicotine really is terrifying. And sure, that's half true. Nicotine is addictive, and not smoking brings discomfort. But explaining everything you miss after quitting with nicotine alone feels a little crude.
One thing that stuck with me from an essay abroad was this angle: "What I missed wasn't the addiction — it was the pause." Not the cigarette itself, but the little break the cigarette created. A reason to step outside mid-work. A few minutes of zoning out after a meal. Those nighttime minutes where no one spoke to you and you just breathed out smoke.
