Stepping onto a cold balcony is already proof you're thinking of your family. Don't let that kindness stop at the door.
Someone smoking on a balcony in winter is standing a little apart from their family.
Through the glass there's a lit room. There's a seat in it that belongs to them. They stand outside anyway, because they know it's better not to smoke indoors. You can't call someone who goes out into a cold night simply thoughtless. There is real consideration in it.
But smoke doesn't stop at consideration.
After the cigarette is out and you come back inside, the smell stays in your clothes, your hair, your breath. You think, I smoked outside. Your family knows that too, which is what makes it hard for them to say anything. And still, the moment you return to the same room, the presence of tobacco comes back into the house with you. Going out to the balcony matters, but that alone doesn't fully protect the people inside.
